Understanding Battery Backup in Online UPS System

27 Feb 2025

Stable power is crucial in today's world. From healthcare and communication to transportation and national security, power is essential in every aspect of modern life. Online UPS systems are used to ensure continuous and stable power supply. Battery backup in online UPS is what provides power during extended outages. This blog helps to understand more about battery backup in online UPS.

How Online UPS Systems Work

Also known as double conversion UPS, the online UPS system consists of a rectifier/charger, inverter, battery, and static switch. These types of UPS systems convert incoming alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and then back to alternating current. During normal operations, the rectifier/charger converts AC power from the mains to DC power, which charges the battery. Then, the inverter converts DC power back to AC power, which is supplied to the connected equipment.

In case of power outages, the static switch automatically shifts the load to the inverter by supplying power from the battery to the connected equipment. This transfer is continuous without any gap.  As a result of this, the connected equipment remains operational. The inverter continues to supply power to the connected equipment until the battery is depleted or the mains power is restored. Once the mains power is restored, the rectifier/charger recharges the battery. Once it is charged, the battery is ready for the next power outage.

Battery Backup in Online UPS

An online UPS system cannot function without the support of a battery. Being a major component of the online UPS system, the battery provides a stable power supply to connected equipment during power outages. The battery backup in online UPS serves purposes including:

Protection from Power Fluctuations

As you might already know, there are chances for various power fluctuations like sags, surges, spikes, and electrical noise. These can damage equipment and disrupt their operation. The battery backup acts as a buffer and protects equipment from these fluctuations.

Uninterrupted Power Supply

The primary reason to invest in an online UPS system is to provide an uninterrupted power supply. Stable and continuous power is crucial in many sectors including hospitals, data centers, financial institutions, etc. During power outages or fluctuations, the battery backup takes over and ensures a stable power supply. This will help the devices to remain operational without any interruption.

The battery backup also allows online UPS to take control over short-term power disturbances, such as momentary power outages or voltage dips. This allows devices to continue operating without interruption. This not only reduces the risk of data loss and equipment damage but also prevents other negative consequences.

Stabilization of Output Power

It is important to stabilize the output power to guarantee a consistent and reliable power supply for the equipment. Battery backup regulates the output voltage and ensures it remains within a narrow tolerance range. This regulated output voltage ensures that devices receive stable power.

Online UPS can smoothly transition to backup power during extended power outages. This way, even when the primary power source is not available, the devices remain operational. This temporary power source keeps devices functional and gives users time to shut down equipment safely.

Battery Backup Runtime

Battery backup runtime defines the amount of time a UPS will be able to power its attached equipment due to power disruption. The battery backup runtime of the system depends on what equipment you decide to backup with your UPS. Another thing to consider is the number of equipment you have plugged into your UPS. More the equipment, less the runtime.
